HGV Training or LGV Training?

We’re often asked what’s the difference between LGV and HGV?

The answer is simple. There is no difference; they’re the same.

HGV Licences

Before 1992, UK lorries were known as Heavy Goods Vehicles. In 1992 the UK started using the EU term Large Goods Vehicles. Since 1992, HGV and LGV have meant the same thing. In 1992, the UK also started using the EU letter-based driving licence categories. So, we still hear descriptions such as Class One HGV Driver, since 1992 LGV CE driver has been an equivalent description as the driver holds a Large Goods Vehicle Lorry (C) with Trailer (E)

LGV Licences

The LGV Categories are easy to understand.

A quick explanation is Car (B), Lorry (C), and Bus (D). An (E) after the letter denotes a trailer, and a 1 denotes a restriction due to weight or number of passengers, e.g., D1 is a minibus, and C1 is a 7.5-tonne lorry.

Even the Government websites switch between using HGV, LGV, and Lorry! The GOVUK site has pages on ‘How to Become an HGV Driver’ and ‘Booking a Lorry Test at an LGV Test Centre’.

This website mainly uses the term HGV because it is the one most commonly used by our candidates.

HGV Training In Manchester

Enterprise is your perfect LGV Training partner. 25 years experience, a fleet of 20 modern vehicles (from 7.5T to articulated) operating from a DSA-approved testing site gives maximum flexibility. We take care of everything from arranging your medical through to your training and final test. We will also help you find work when you have passed.

Our acre site in Ancoats, Manchester, is approved by DSA for delivery of the 3a reversing test and Module 4 Initial CPC Test. More importantly, it means candidates have a full-size manoeuvring area to master the reversing exercise before submitting for the test. It also avoids wasting valuable training time travelling to a different site to be tested.

HGV Training is a big investment. Not all training businesses are the same. Choosing the right training partner matters. Our advice to candidates before spending their hard-earned cash is to visit the training centre, see the vehicles, training facilities and meet the staff. Also, why not ask other drivers who they trained with? Only when you are confident you have a training organisation that you trust should you book your course.

Class 2 First? or Straight to Class 1 Licence?

Is the Fast Track HGV Training Course your best option? It might be…

In September 2021, the Government announced that it was allowing candidates to undertake Class 1 (Cat CE) training without having acquired a Class 2 (Cat C) licence first.

Whether the fast track option is better than the traditional 2 step approach is a question we are asked numerous times every day. The answer we can give is ‘it depends on the candidates’ existing driving skills, ability to learn new skills, and personal circumstances’.

For the average driver, it will save time but probably won’t save much money. It might also work out to be more expensive as traditionally, candidates would pass their Class 2 and would have gained many hours of experience driving rigid lorries before progressing to Class 1.

Most drivers are going straight to LGV1 cope brilliantly – it was, after all, the normal route pre-1997. However, some candidates find the 2 stage approach beneficial in that it allows them to progress at a development speed that they feel more comfortable with.

A lot of candidates see ‘artic driver’ as their dream job and try to get there as quickly as possible. However, it is worth remembering that Class 2 drivers are also well-paid. If you are on a tighter budget, the sensible option might be to earn good money while gaining experience as a Class 2 driver before upskilling to Class 1. If you find the right employer, they might even pay for it!

Please discuss it with us – we’re here to help you make the best decision.
