What is ADR?

ADR is the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road — the rules that govern how hazardous loads are moved safely by road across the UK and Europe. If you drive a vehicle carrying dangerous goods above the exemption limits, you’re legally required to hold a valid ADR certificate.

Dangerous goods cover more than you might expect — fuel, gas, chemicals, paints, aerosols, lithium batteries and clinical waste among them. An ADR qualification proves you understand the hazards, the safety standards and your legal responsibilities when carrying them.

It’s also one of the most cost-effective ways for a professional driver to widen their prospects. ADR-qualified drivers are in steady demand across the fuel, chemical, construction and waste sectors, and the qualification typically opens the door to more specialist, better-paid work.

The standard ADR course covers the 7 common classes (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 9). Classes 1 (Explosives) and 7 (Radioactives) are a very niche requirement — due to limited demand we don’t currently run courses for these.

Every ADR course is built around the compulsory Core module, then the Packages and/or Tanks modules and the dangerous goods classes relevant to your work. Whichever route you take, here’s what you’ll cover.

The Core Module

On every course

The Core module is the backbone of the qualification, and every driver takes it. It builds the knowledge anyone carrying dangerous goods needs — the law, the risks, your responsibilities, and exactly what to do if something goes wrong on the road.

Regulations & responsibilities

The general rules governing the carriage of dangerous goods, the driver’s legal duties, enforcement and civil liability.

Classification, marking & labelling

How dangerous goods are classified, and the placards, labels and hazard signs used to identify them.

Documentation

The transport documents and written emergency instructions (Tremcards) you must carry, and what they contain.

Loading, segregation & securing

Safe loading and unloading, the rules on mixed loads and keeping incompatible goods apart, and securing the load.

Security & high-consequence goods

Security awareness, reporting suspicious activity, and the extra care high-consequence dangerous goods demand.

PPE, fire & first aid

Personal and respiratory protective equipment, fire prevention and extinguisher use, and emergency first aid.

Journey planning & the vehicle

Planning routes, parking and supervising the vehicle, and checks before, during and after the journey.

Incidents & the environment

What to do at the scene of an accident or spillage, and protecting people and the environment from harm.

Hands-on practical training

ADR isn’t all classroom theory. Your course includes practical exercises so you’re ready to act, not just recall — including the safe use of fire extinguishers and emergency first aid such as CPR, the recovery position, and dealing with burns and chemical contamination. The practical training is delivered on the exam day, prior to candidates sitting their exams.

Packages

For carrying dangerous goods in anything other than a tank — drums, boxes, IBCs and goods in bulk. You’ll cover:

  • Packaging types, standards and UN approval marking
  • Correct labelling and hazard marking of packages
  • Loading, unloading and handling procedures
  • Segregation and mixed-load rules
  • Where limited-quantity and other exemptions apply

Tanks

For carrying dangerous goods in tank-vehicles and tank-containers, such as fuel, gas and waste tankers. You’ll cover:

  • Tank types, construction and safety systems
  • Filling and discharge systems and procedures
  • The build-up and safe discharge of static electricity
  • How the load behaves on the road, and vehicle stability
  • Operator duties and what to do in an incident

The Dangerous Goods Classes

For each class you train in, you’ll learn its characteristics, marking and labelling, the specific dangers and precautions, the segregation rules and the right PPE. See the full class-by-class breakdown, with real-world examples, in the “What is ADR?” section above.

How You’re Assessed

You’ll sit a multiple-choice exam for each module and class you take, with a pass mark of 70%. Exams are sat online at your chosen venue, so results are issued instantly — and if you don’t pass a module, you only resit that one.

How it works

Live online ADR training

Our ADR courses are delivered live online over Zoom, so you train from home, the depot, or anywhere with a connection. The only day you attend a venue is your exam day — the Friday for weekday courses, or a Friday or Saturday for weekend courses — when exams are sat on laptops at your chosen centre.

Introduced five years ago, online training has been hugely popular ever since — it’s now our most popular way to qualify, giving drivers far more flexibility over how and when they train:

ADR Card Due To Expire? Renew In Just Two Days Plus Exams

You don’t need to sit the full course again. Our refresher courses run every week, includes 14 hours of Driver CPC, and starts from £439 — exams and VAT included.

Take it any time within the final 12 months of your card. Your new card runs from your current expiry date, so renewing early never costs you any time.

Refreshers, Every Week

Refresher courses aren’t new — they simply weren’t run as classroom courses in the past. Now that training runs online, we deliver refresher courses every week, saving drivers and employers real time and money.

No Need To Redo The Full Course

Some providers will tell you a renewal means sitting the entire course again. It doesn’t. A 2-day course plus exams is all that’s required — though you’re welcome to take the full course if you’d like the extra learning or the additional Driver CPC hours.

How It Works

Attend a reduced 2-day course and sit your exams on day 3. Weekday courses generally run Wednesday and Thursday with exams on Friday; weekend courses run Saturday and Sunday with exams on a Friday or Saturday. 14 hours of Driver CPC can be claimed directly from the DVSA.

Time It Before Your Card Expires

Because your new certificate runs from the expiry of your current card, you can train any time within the final 12 months without losing a single day — there’s no need to wait until the last minute. Your exams must be completed before your current card expires, so we recommend booking at least a few weeks ahead to allow time for your new card to be posted out before the old one runs out.

The basics
What does ADR stand for?
ADR comes from the French Accord Dangereux Routier — the European Agreement concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road. It’s based on a United Nations treaty and sets the rules for moving hazardous goods by road across most of Europe.
Do I need an ADR licence?
If you drive a vehicle carrying dangerous goods above the exemption limits, yes — it’s a legal requirement. Some loads are exempt, such as small quantities below the threshold, goods in limited or excepted quantities, and goods carried for private use. If you’re unsure whether your load qualifies, get in touch and we’ll advise.
Who issues the ADR certificate?
Your certificate is issued by Qualifications Scotland (formerly the SQA), which runs ADR examinations as agent for the Department for Transport. Our centre is DVSA-approved, and the course is also approved for Driver CPC.
How long is an ADR licence valid?
Five years. If you renew, the new licence runs for exactly five years from the expiry date of your current one.
Is ADR recognised across Europe?
Yes. Because ADR is a shared European agreement, a valid certificate is recognised across the signatory states, not just the UK.
Courses & booking
What’s the difference between an initial and a refresher course?
An initial course is for new drivers, or for anyone whose certificate has expired. A refresher is a shorter, lower-cost course for drivers renewing a current licence. You can only refresh the classes and modules you already hold — to add anything new, you need initial training for that element.
When can I take a refresher?
During the final 12 months of your current licence. It is recommended that you complete a refresher at least six weeks before your expiry so the two qualifications can be linked to run consecutively; your new licence then runs five years from your current expiry date. The refresher exam must always be completed before the expiry date. Leave it too late and you’ll need to sit the initial course again.
Can I add the Tanks module, or extra classes, later?
Yes. Add Tanks by attending the Tanks module and passing the exam, and you’ll be issued a new card showing you can now carry your existing classes in tanks as well as packages. New classes are added by taking the initial training for that class.
Can I train for just one class of dangerous goods?
Yes — and it’s something very few providers offer as a regular course. If a driver only needs a single class, we run a specialised 2-day course covering Core, Packages and one class of your choice — Class 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 or 9 — with training Monday and Tuesday and exams on Friday. It runs every week, carries 14 hours of Driver CPC, and gets drivers qualified and back on the road faster by cutting out the classes they’ll never use. How does the online course work?
Training is delivered live over Zoom, so you learn from home or work. You only attend your chosen venue on the exam day. Exams are sat on laptops at the centre, and because they’re online, results are issued as soon as you finish.
How much does ADR cost?
Our prices start at £439 inc VAT and exams, and depend on the course and whether the Tanks module is included. Full current prices are shown in the course cards above — every price includes VAT and your exam fees.
Exams & results
What’s the pass mark?
70% for each module you sit.
What if I fail a module?
You only resit the module you didn’t pass, not the whole course — and we run resits every week, so there’s no long wait. The resit must be sat within 16 weeks of your original training; after that, you’d need to retake the training for that module before you can sit it again.
When do I get my results and my certificate?
Because exams are sat online, your results are issued the same day, at the end of the course. Your certificate is then produced and posted directly to you by Qualifications Scotland, usually within 14 days.
Can I get extra time in the exam?
If you have a condition that affects you in exams, Qualifications Scotland can grant extra time. You’ll need to apply in advance with supporting evidence — send it to us and we’ll submit the request on your behalf.
Driver CPC
Do ADR courses count towards Driver CPC?
Yes — 21 hours on the 3-day Core, Packages & 7 Classes, 28 hours on the 4-day course with Tanks, and 14 hours on a refresher (either course).
How are the Driver CPC hours claimed?
On initial courses we upload your hours to DVSA for you, charged at £8.75 per 7-hour block — so £26.25 for 21 hours (Core, Packages & 7 Classes) or £35 for 28 hours (with Tanks). On a refresher, claiming the 14 hours is the driver’s own responsibility: email cpcre@dvsa.gov.uk with your driving licence number, full postal address, and your certificate of attendance (which we provide as a PDF).
Can I bank CPC hours for later?
No. You must complete 35 hours during the life of your current Driver Qualification Card. If you’ve already done some periodic training, you can only claim enough ADR hours to top you up to 35.
Can new drivers claim CPC hours before completing initial CPC?
No. Periodic training only counts once you hold a Driver Qualification Card. Ideally, pass your initial Driver CPC (module 4) first, then do ADR — that way your ADR hours count towards your periodic total.
Licence & documents
Do I need a driving licence or an HGV licence to do ADR?
You do not need to hold a standard driving licence just to attend and complete an ADR training course and take the exams, but you do need an appropriate underlying driving licence (such as a car, van, or HGV licence) to actually drive a vehicle carrying dangerous goods on public roads. To drive an HGV carrying dangerous goods you’ll also need the relevant HGV entitlement and your Driver CPC.
What does “In Tanks” and “Other than in Tanks” mean on the card?
The back of the card has two columns. “Other than in Tanks” covers packages and bulk; “In Tanks” covers tankers and tank-containers. The classes you’re qualified for are listed under whichever column(s) apply — for example, a fuel tanker driver would have Class 3 under “In Tanks.”
What documents must I carry when transporting dangerous goods?
Your ADR certificate, transport documents describing the load (UN number and description), and written emergency instructions (a Tremcard) supplied by the consignor. You must carry your ADR card at all times when carrying dangerous goods — it’s an offence not to.
Do I get a reminder to renew?
No — there’s no automatic reminder, so the responsibility sits with you and your employer to track your expiry date.
What if I lose my card?
If you lose your ADR card, contact Qualifications Scotland to request a replacement — they’ll post it to your registered address.
