Online Exam Requirements
Your Transport Manager CPC exams can be sat online from home or work. They are remotely invigilated and monitored throughout, so the rules are strict. Please read this page carefully before your exam day.
How your online exam works
Your exams are set and marked by the exam board, Skills & Education Group (SEG) Awards. There are two exams — a Multiple-Choice exam and a Case Study exam — and each has its own rules.
The exams are sat remotely and monitored throughout using remote-invigilation software, also known as online proctoring. From the moment your exam begins, the software checks your photo ID, asks you to scan the room, and records you through your webcam and microphone. Your browser is locked down so you cannot open anything else, and a remote invigilator reviews the session to make sure every exam is completed fairly.
Because the exams are watched this closely, everything on this page matters. Even if you are doing nothing wrong, anything that looks suspicious can be flagged and could bring the integrity of your exam into question. Failing to follow the instructions can result in your exam being voided and your fee being lost.
Before your exam
Set your room up in advance. Before your exam starts, make sure the following are all in place.
- You are located within the UK.
- You have valid photo ID (driving licence or passport) ready to show at the start of each exam.
- You are using a desktop or laptop with a working camera and microphone.
- You have a stable internet connection.
- You are not using a mobile phone, tablet or iPad.
- You are alone in a quiet, private room with no interruptions.
- There is no background noise, music or television.
- The room is well-lit, with no bright light behind you.
- You are using one screen only — additional monitors disconnected.
- All other programmes, windows and browser tabs are closed.
- Your phone and other electronic devices are away and inaccessible.
- All watches have been removed.
- No headphones, earbuds or listening equipment.
- Your desk is clear of anything that is not permitted.
- Any drinks are in a clear, screw-top bottle with labels removed — no mugs.
- You are appropriately dressed, as if in public.
Room scan
When asked, you must complete a 360° scan of the room with your camera. This confirms you are alone and that no prohibited materials are present, so have the room prepared before you log in.
During the exam
These apply to both exams. The Multiple-Choice exam has extra rules because no materials are allowed.
✓ You must
- Stay in full view of the webcam at all times.
- Remain in the exam room for the full duration.
- Complete any room scan or system checks when asked.
- Keep your eyes on the screen during the Multiple-Choice exam, unless instructed otherwise.
✕ You must not
- Leave the room.
- Speak to anyone.
- Use a phone or any other electronic device.
- Use headphones, earbuds or listening equipment.
- Smoke or vape — not permitted under any circumstances.
- Move out of view of the webcam.
Multiple-Choice exam only: you must also not look down at your desk or lap, look away from or around the room, appear to look off-screen, or use any manuals, books, notepads, paper, calculator or other materials.
The two exams
The rules differ between the two exams. The strict eye-contact rules apply mainly to the Multiple-Choice exam; the Case Study exam is open-book.
Multiple-Choice
Closed book — strict monitoring- No additional materials are permitted.
- Physical calculators, pen and paper are not allowed.
- Use only the on-screen notepad and calculator provided.
- Keep your eyes on the screen and stay in full camera view throughout.
Case Study
Open book — stay on camera- Open-book: you may use your manual, books, notepads and paper.
- Start with a tidy desk — slot loose or blank paper inside your manual at the start, then remove it to use once the exam begins.
- A basic, non-programmable calculator is permitted.
- A dictionary in your mother tongue is permitted, if required.
- You may look away from the screen more, but must remain clearly visible on camera at all times.
System checks & technical support
Login & system checks
A few days before your exam, the exam board will email you to complete system checks. These must be completed by midday on the Thursday before your exam — your exam links will not be issued until they are done.
You must be logged in and ready at the start of the exam. Late logins are not permitted, and failing to complete the required checks before the start time may result in you forfeiting your exam fee.
