The medical is the first step of gaining your PCV or LGV licence; upon successful completion of the medical, you will be granted a provisional licence.
Medicals are run on weekends at The Old Glassworks, 37 Canal Street, Stockport, SK1 8BZ.
Medical includes eye test. We will also send your application off ‘tracked’ to the DVLA free of charge!

HGV / PCV Medical Requirements
It is advisable to check that you meet the medical standards needed for driving before you make an appointment. If you have any doubts please consult your own GP.
Medical standards required for drivers of Group 2 vehicles (lorries, buses, and minibuses) are higher than those required for Group 1 (car and motorcycle) drivers.
These standards also apply when renewing categories C1 (small or medium lorries between 3500–7500kg) and D1 (minibuses not for hire or reward) which were given when a car driving test was passed before 1997.

Consulting Your Own GP
The doctor will only sign you off as medically fit if they are satisfied that you meet the requirements.
If you have a complex medical history it is often easier to get your own GP to conduct the Driver Medical and complete the D4 forms.
As a rough guide, you should consult your own GP if have a history of any of the following:
- Uncontrolled Symptoms Of Double Vision
- Intolerance to Glare
- Restricted Visual Field
- Neurological Disorders
- Diabetes mellitus
- Certain Cardiac Conditions
- Psychiatric Illness
- Recent Substance Misuse
- Sleep Disorders
- Any Other Conditions Likely to Affect the Safe Driving of a Large Goods Vehicle
HGV / PCV Medical Eyesight Requirements
All drivers must be able to read in good light, with glasses or contact lenses if worn, a car number plate from 20 metres, and have eyesight (visual acuity) of 6/12 (decimal Snellen equivalent 0.5) or better. Applicants for Group 2 entitlements must also have, as measured by the 6 metre Snellen chart:
- a visual acuity of at least 6/7.5 (decimal Snellen equivalent 0.8) in the better eye
- a visual acuity of at least 6/60 (decimal Snellen equivalent 0.1) in the worse eye
This may be achieved with or without glasses or contact lenses.
If glasses are worn for driving, the spectacle prescription of either lens used must not be of a corrective power greater than plus 8 (+8) dioptres in any meridian.

Driver Medical FAQs
How long does a Driver Medical take?
A typical appointment lasts around 15 minutes, though it varies dependent upon the Candidate, their medical history, and eyesight. A Candidate with no medical issues and perfect vision can be processed within 10-15 minutes.
What do I need to bring to my medical?
Just bring your photocard driving licence, the glasses or contact lenses you wear for driving (if any), and a note of any medication you currently take. You don’t need to bring any paperwork — we provide both the D2 application and D4 medical forms at your appointment.
Do you provide the D2 & D4 forms?
Yes — both the D2 application form and the D4 medical form are provided at your appointment. Our staff will help you complete the paperwork, check it, and post it ‘tracked’ to the DVLA free of charge.
Who can complete the D4 Driver Medical?
The medical examination is completed by a GMC-registered doctor. The D4 medical includes a vision assessment which must be filled in by a doctor (if suitably qualified), optician, or optometrist. All doctors at Enterprise are able to complete both the vision and medical assessment.
How good must my eyesight be to pass the DVLA medical?
To pass the DVLA medical, you must have a visual acuity of at least 6/12 in either or both eyes, with or without corrective lenses. If your vision is worse than this, you may still be able to pass the medical if you can meet the standard when wearing glasses or contact lenses. What if I need glasses or contact lenses to pass the DVLA D4 Medical eyesight test?
You are required to wear whatever corrective lenses you need to meet the required standards for the DVLA D4 Medical eyesight test. If you wear glasses or contact lenses, you must bring them to your test. The optometrist administering the test will assess whether you meet the required standards with or without corrective lenses. Please consult your optometrist if you have any questions about your vision and the DVLA D4 Medical eyesight test.
How long is a Driver Medical valid for?
A D4 medical form should have been completed within 4 months of submission. We provide the D4 form at your appointment.
Do I need to stop driving whilst the DVLA investigates a medical condition?
No driver is permitted to drive any vehicle if medically unfit to do so. Once a driver knows they have a medical condition, they must only drive if fit to do so. In cases of uncertainty, they should take advice from their doctors. DVLA will revoke a licence once there is definite evidence of a medical condition that makes the driver unfit to drive. When DVLA are first notified of a medical circumstance, they will make enquiries, generally by contacting the driver’s GP. While they will generally not revoke the licence until they have concluded their enquiries, any driver that is aware that they are unfit to drive should not continue to drive.
When can I apply to renew my licence?
You may apply to renew your licence up to 3 months before the expiry of your current licence.
What is the DVLA D2 licence application form?
The DVLA D2 licence application form is a form used to apply for a provisional driving licence. We provide the D2 form at your appointment and help you complete it.
