HGV Training or LGV Training?
We’re often asked the difference between LGV and HGV. The answer is simple – there is none; they’re the same thing. Before 1992 UK lorries were Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV); since 1992 the EU term Large Goods Vehicles (LGV) has been used. A “Class 1 HGV driver” and an “LGV C+E driver” mean the same. Even Government sites switch between the terms – we mostly say HGV because that’s what our candidates use.
Enterprise is your perfect training partner. Driver training is where we started back in 1997, and it’s still at the heart of what we do. A fleet of 12 modern vehicles – from 7.5t to articulated – operating from our own site in Ancoats, Manchester, gives maximum flexibility. We take care of everything, from arranging your medical through to your training and final test, and we’ll help you find work once you’ve passed.
Our Ancoats site is DVSA-approved for the 3a off-road manoeuvres (“reversing”) test and the Module 4 Initial CPC test. That means you get a full-size manoeuvring area to master the reverse before you’re tested – and no valuable training time wasted travelling to another site. Read more about Enterprise.
What we train
Which licence do I need?
One of the most common questions we’re asked. A quick guide: Car (B), Lorry (C), Bus (D). An “E” denotes a trailer; a “1” denotes a weight restriction. Here’s what each lorry category covers.
Class 1
A tractor unit and trailer combination – no weight limit.
Also called: Class 1, Artic, LGV1, HGV1
Class 2
A rigid vehicle – no upper weight limit (commonly 18 to 32 tonnes).
Also called: Class 2, Rigid, LGV2, HGV2
7.5 Tonne
A rigid vehicle with a maximum weight of 7.5T. The category most ambulances fall under.
Also called: 7.5 Tonner
C1 + Trailer
A small rigid C1 vehicle and trailer combination. Maximum weight of combination 12 tonnes.
Also called: C1 plus trailer
A Category C+E driver can drive C, C1 and C1+E vehicles. A Category C driver can drive a C1 (any rigid vehicle).

Your journey to a lorry licence
It varies with the individual, but because we have a large team of instructors we can usually move quickly. Here’s the full route, step by step – tap any step for the detail.
1Driver Medical – provisional entitlementWeek 1 · Sunday
To attend a D4 driver medical and apply for a provisional LGV licence, you must be aged 18 or over. We run medicals every Sunday at our Doctor’s premises in Stockport.
Enterprise takes all the hassle out of the initial stages. We appreciate how complex the DVLA licence application forms can be, so we organise all the necessary paperwork and documents to gain your provisional entitlement, and we book your theory test when you’re ready using our DVSA training-booking facility.
Forms are posted Special Delivery, and you should typically receive your provisional licence around 10 days to two weeks after your medical.
2Theory Tests – multiple choice & hazard perceptionUnder 2 weeks
Before your driving lessons you must pass two theory tests: a multiple-choice test (module 1a) and a hazard perception test (module 1b). You study online from the day you sign up, so you’re ready to book the moment your provisional entitlement is granted.
We pre-buy theory test slots so you avoid the public waiting times – getting you tested and moving on far faster than booking direct. Evening and Saturday tests are available at your local centre.
You need to pass both tests before progressing to driving lessons, and theory passes remain valid for two years. Some candidates also take the Initial CPC module 2 test at this point (see step 4).
3Driving Lessons & Test~2 weeks later
With theory passed, we usually book you into driver training within another two weeks. Training focuses first on the Module 3a off-road manoeuvres test (the reversing exercise) before moving on to the Module 3b on-road driving test. A small gap is scheduled between 3a and 3b so that difficulty on the 3a element never puts your 3b test at risk.
Learning to drive a lorry is very different to driving a car. You’re already a driver with road experience; we train you to be a professional driver in charge of a much larger vehicle. Training is delivered 1:1, typically in four-hour blocks. The 3a is taken at our own Ancoats site; the 3b from the nearby Bredbury DVSA test centre.
4Initial CPC Module 2 Theory TestAlongside
If you don’t have acquired rights (normally from passing a UK car test before 1997) and want to work professionally, you’ll need Initial CPC. This involves a theory test (module 2) and a practical ‘show-me, tell-me’ test (module 4); on completion you receive a Driver Qualification Card (DQC).
The module 2 theory test can be taken as soon as your provisional entitlement is granted and books in a similar time to your theories. From a time-saving point of view we recommend doing it shortly after your 1a & 1b tests, and you can complete it alongside your training.
5Initial CPC Module 4 TestAround training
The Initial CPC Module 4 tests are held weekly at our Ancoats training centre, so you can complete it around your practical training. Full study materials are provided.
Passing the Module 4 test results in the driver receiving their Driver Qualification Card – and you’re work ready.
Already have 7.5t acquired rights? The 4-step route
Already hold 7.5t (C1) acquired rights from passing your car test before 1 January 1997? Your route is shorter – you already have C1 lorry entitlement.
Step 1 – Medical: as above, every Sunday in Stockport, to obtain provisional entitlement for the larger categories.
Step 2 – Theory tests: multiple-choice and hazard perception, with pre-bought slots to skip the public waiting times.
Step 3 – Driving lessons & test: 1:1 training focusing on 3a then 3b, exactly as above.
Step 4 – Periodic CPC: candidates already working as 7.5t drivers generally already hold a DQC that covers larger goods vehicles. Those with acquired rights complete 35 hours of Periodic CPC (in 7-hour blocks, any time) to obtain a DQC valid for five years. We run Periodic CPC seven days a week, including evenings.
Choosing your route
Class 2 first, or straight to Class 1?
Straight to Class 1
Since 2021 you can train for Class 1 (C+E) without holding Class 2 first. For the average driver this saves both time and, generally, money. Most drivers going straight to Class 1 cope brilliantly; it was, after all, the normal route pre-1997.
The two-step route
Some candidates prefer passing Class 2 first, gaining experience on a rigid before progressing to Class 1 at a comfortable pace. Class 2 drivers are also well paid – if budget is tight, you can earn while you gain experience, then upskill. The right employer might even pay for it.

Ambulance & 7.5t (C1) Training
Most ambulances and patient-transport vehicles weigh between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes, which means they need a Category C1 licence – not a standard car licence. Whether you’re heading for a patient-transport, ambulance-care or emergency-support role, or simply need to drive a 7.5-tonne lorry, C1 is the qualification you need.

Ed our course instructor was very knowledgeable, explained everything we needed to know and kept reassuring us he was happy to go over things. The exam was well set up and the examiner polite and helpful. The whole process was easy to understand. I passed all three exams first time with no experience at all.
Instructors were very knowledgeable with methods to get my driving up to standard. I passed first time and feel confident to be a HGV driver. The vehicle appeared to be the largest Class 2 size, which is useful to have trained with.

What can I say about this place? The instructors are extremely clued up, friendly and make you feel at ease even when you're messing up. The vehicles are clean and drive well. If you're thinking of taking an HGV course it's a decent place – pay attention and they'll get you to the level you need.

I had never been in an HGV truck in my life. I started training on the Saturday and passed my Class 2 on the Wednesday. I did my CPC a week later and passed that too. These guys give you their full attention. I then took my Class 1, which I also passed. Absolutely brilliant.

Enterprise give you everything you need to pass first time – hazard perception and theory material, driving lessons from experienced instructors, and CPC training. If you listen and take on board what the instructor tells you, you should pass first time. They help you through the whole process, even applying for your provisional.
Excellent place! They got me through both Class 2 and Class 1 first time with six minors or less on the 16 hour courses. Their methods and tutors are top notch and exactly what the examiners want to see. With help from the very beginning for theory and practical, I cannot recommend these guys enough.

Banksman Training
A banksman is responsible for people’s safety as they direct vehicles in the workplace, making sure vehicles load and unload safely. Almost a quarter of all deaths involving vehicles at work occur when a vehicle is reversing, so the banksman is the ‘eyes and ears’ of the driver – which is why thorough training is vital.
Course content
Our course gives you the skills to work safely with others, including the dangers of reversing large vehicles in enclosed spaces and the hand signals used to guide drivers. We teach both the theory and the practice of working as a banksman. You’ll learn about:
- the role of the driver and banksman when reversing, and the causes and costs of accidents
- danger areas for reversing vehicles
- legal duties (Health and Safety at Work Act)
- action checklists and vehicle manoeuvring activities
- the HSG136 standard code of signals
- physical measures and exclusion zones
We deliver at your company premises so you learn in familiar surroundings. The course runs from half a day to two days, depending on the number of people, their experience and the complexity of the role.
Yard Shunter Courses
A yard shunter moves heavy goods vehicles around a company’s yard or off-road premises, and is in charge of coupling and uncoupling trailers safely and in a controlled manner – working so that people aren’t hurt and vehicles aren’t damaged.
Course content
Our course gives you the skills and knowledge to carry out the job, covering both theory and the practice of safely manoeuvring vehicles around the yard or other off-road areas. You’ll learn about:
- the vehicle and its equipment
- pre-use inspection and checks
- coupling and uncoupling
- driving techniques and slow-speed manoeuvring
- blind spots, loading bays and confined spaces
- parking and general safety precautions
- site-specific safety policies and your responsibility for keeping yourself and others safe
We deliver at your premises for a maximum of three candidates. The course runs from half a day to two days, depending on the number of people, their driving experience and the difficulty of the role.
Refresher Training
Refresher training for drivers of all classes of vehicle – ideal if you hold the category on your licence but are returning after a period ‘away from the wheel’.
Delivered in four-hour blocks, focusing on the skills you feel least confident about.

HGV Training FAQs
Is HGV training the same as LGV training?
Yes – they mean the same thing. Before 1992 UK lorries were Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV); since 1992 the EU term Large Goods Vehicles (LGV) has been used. A ‘Class 1 HGV driver’ and an ‘LGV C+E driver’ are the same. We mostly say HGV because that’s the term our candidates use.
How much does HGV training cost with Enterprise?
Our 7.5t (C1) courses start at £1,239, Class 2 (Cat C) beginner packages are £1,759, straight-to-Class 1 (C+E) is £2,999, and the two-step route runs to £3,649. Every price includes VAT and test fees, with no hidden costs.
What’s included in the price?
Beginner packages cover your D4 medical, provisional licence application, online theory study, both theory tests, your driving course including the 3a and 3b tests, and (where required) your Initial or Periodic Driver CPC. Everything is arranged for you from start to finish.
Are you a broker?
No. Enterprise is not a broker. When you buy with Enterprise, you train with Enterprise – in our own vehicles, with our own instructors, at our own site. You’re never passed on to a third party.
How long does the whole process take?
It varies, but it can move quickly. Medicals run every Sunday, provisional licences are usually returned by the DVLA within around 10 days to two weeks, and with theory passed first time you can typically be booked into driver training within another two weeks. Start to finish – including Driver CPC – it has been done in as little as six weeks.
Can I train around a full-time job?
Yes. We train seven days a week with evening and weekend availability, delivered in flexible blocks (typically four hours). We build a schedule around your availability.
How far in advance do I need to book?
We’d always recommend booking as early as you can. We have availability most weeks and a large team of instructors, so the training itself is rarely the hold-up. The main variables are the DVLA returning your provisional entitlement and driving test availability at the test centre – so getting booked in early helps secure your preferred dates.
Do I have to pass my theory before driving lessons?
Yes. You need to pass both the multiple-choice (1a) and hazard perception (1b) theory tests before starting your driving course. You study online from the day you sign up, and we pre-buy test slots so you avoid the public waiting times. Theory passes are valid for two years.
Should I do Class 2 first or go straight to Class 1?
It depends on your existing driving skills, how quickly you pick up new skills, and your budget. Going straight to Class 1 can save time but not always money; the two-step route lets less confident drivers build experience on a rigid first. We’re happy to talk it through.
What is the 3a reversing test?
The 3a is the off-road manoeuvres test – an ‘S’-shaped reverse (plus coupling/uncoupling for trailer categories). Our Ancoats site is DVSA-approved for the 3a, so you practise and test on a full-size manoeuvring area on-site, with no time wasted travelling elsewhere to be tested.
Do I need Driver CPC?
If you passed your car test after 1 January 1997 and want to drive lorries professionally, you’ll need Initial Driver CPC (module 2 theory and module 4 practical) as well as your licence. You can complete it alongside your training. Note that paramedics and ambulance drivers are exempt from Driver CPC.
What licence do I need to drive a 7.5-tonne lorry or an ambulance?
A Category C1 licence covers rigid vehicles between 3.5 and 7.5 tonnes – the category most ambulances and patient-transport vehicles fall under. We offer C1 training as a beginner package or a standalone course. See our 7.5t / Ambulance section above.
Where is training held?
Driver training and the 3a test take place at our Ancoats, Manchester site (Pollard Street). The 3b on-road test is from the nearby Bredbury DVSA test centre, and medicals run every Sunday in Stockport.
What are ‘acquired rights’ (grandfather rights)?
If you passed a UK car test before 1 January 1997 you generally already hold C1 (7.5t) entitlement. To drive professionally you’d complete 35 hours of Periodic Driver CPC rather than the Initial CPC tests. We offer Periodic CPC seven days a week.

Initial Driver CPC. To drive a 7.5-tonne vehicle commercially you need Initial Driver CPC – the module 2 theory test (taken once your provisional entitlement is added) and the module 4 practical ‘show me, tell me’ test, which we run weekly at our Ancoats centre. On passing module 4 you receive a Driver Qualification Card (DQC) and you're work ready. Paramedics and ambulance drivers are exempt from Driver CPC – see the Ambulance / Paramedic option.
