The traditional route, and the one we’d recommend for most drivers. You complete five 7-hour courses — either as full days, or split across two consecutive evenings — to make up your 35 hours. It qualifies you to drive professionally in both the UK and the EU, and because our 7-hour courses work out cheaper per hour, doing your full CPC this way is actually lower cost overall than the National route.

If your Driver Qualification Card has lapsed — expired more than 60 days but less than 2 years ago — you don’t have to sit all 35 hours again to get moving. A single 7-hour Return to Driving module gets you back behind the wheel professionally in the UK straight away. It issues you a National DQC only, valid for 12 months — so to drive in the EU as well, or to hold a full card, you complete a further 28 hours of International within those 12 months. There are separate HGV and PCV versions.

About Driver CPC

The Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) is the qualification professional lorry, bus and coach drivers must hold to drive for a living. It was introduced to raise road safety and keep standards high across the industry, and it applies to anyone driving an HGV or PCV as the main part of their job.

Once qualified, every professional driver must complete 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years to keep their CPC. Miss the deadline and you can’t drive professionally until the hours are done — and you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without it. You can spread the hours however you like across the five years; it’s your responsibility to keep them topped up.

Since February 2025 there have been two types of Driver CPC. International covers you to drive in the UK and the EU and is completed as 7-hour courses — it’s the traditional format and by far the most popular. National covers UK-only driving and uses shorter 3.5-hour courses. Either way, the total is the same 35 hours. If a lapsed driver needs to get back on the road, a one-day Return to Driving module is the quickest route.

Drivers who have already completed Initial CPC, and those with long-standing entitlement (acquired / grandfather rights), will always need periodic training. The basics
What is Driver CPC?
Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is the qualification you need to drive a lorry (HGV) or bus/coach (PCV) professionally. It was introduced to improve road safety and keep driving standards high across the industry.
Do I need Driver CPC?
If you drive an HGV or PCV as the main part of your job — for hire or reward — then yes. There are some exemptions (for example, driving to and from your own work where driving isn’t the main activity), but most professional drivers need it. If you’re unsure, get in touch and we’ll help you work it out.
How many hours do I need, and how often?
35 hours of periodic training every 5 years. You can spread the hours however you like across the five years — all at once, or a course at a time. It’s your responsibility to keep them up to date.
What happens if I miss the deadline?
You can’t drive professionally until you’ve completed the 35 hours, and you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid CPC. There’s no automatic reminder, so it pays to track your own deadline — or let us help you plan it.
Do you train PCV (bus & coach) drivers as well as HGV?
Yes — fully. We run dedicated courses for PCV drivers every week alongside our HGV courses, so bus and coach drivers get exactly the same choice of dates, times and topics.
National, International & Return to Driving
What’s the difference between National and International CPC?
International covers you to drive in the UK and the EU and is completed as 7-hour courses (five of them for your 35 hours) — it’s the traditional format and the most popular. National covers UK-only driving and uses shorter 3.5-hour courses (ten of them for 35 hours). Either way the total is 35 hours; we’d recommend International for most drivers.
Which should I choose?
If you drive in Europe, or ever might, choose International — it covers the UK and EU. Because our 7-hour courses are better value per hour, doing your full CPC the International way is also cheaper overall than National. National suits drivers who are certain they’ll only ever drive in the UK and prefer shorter 3.5-hour sessions.
Do you offer e-learning?
No — our courses are live, tutor-led training over Zoom, not self-paced e-learning. You join a real instructor and a real group, which keeps the sessions interactive and engaging. (E-learning is a separate thing and not something we run.)
My CPC has expired — what are my options?
If it lapsed more than 60 days but less than 2 years ago, a one-day Return to Driving module gets you back on UK roads straight away (with a further 28 hours of International within 12 months to add the EU). If it expired within the last 60 days, or more than 2 years ago, you complete the standard 35 hours. Use the “What Driver CPC do I need?” checker above to see your exact route.
Is Driver CPC being scrapped?
No. Despite recurring rumours and a government consultation, Driver CPC remains a legal requirement for professional HGV and PCV drivers. The rules have been updated (the National/International split from December 2024), but the qualification itself is staying.
New drivers & acquired rights
What are grandfather (acquired) rights?
If you got your vocational licence before Driver CPC was introduced — HGV before 10 September 2009, or PCV before 10 September 2008 — you have “acquired rights” and don’t need the Initial CPC. The same applies if you passed your car (Category B) driving test before 1 January 1997, which carries C1 (up to 7.5t) grandfather entitlement. In every case you just complete 35 hours of periodic training like everyone else.
I’m new to driving — do I need Initial CPC?
If you got your HGV licence on or after 10 September 2009 (or your PCV licence on or after 10 September 2008), and you haven’t held a Driver CPC before, you’ll usually need the Initial CPC — the Module 2 case study and Module 4 practical demonstration — before you can drive professionally. If you passed your car (Category B) test before 1 January 1997, you instead have acquired (grandfather) rights and can go straight to 35 hours of periodic training. How do I check what I’ve already done?
You can check your recorded periodic training hours any time on the GOV.UK service: Check your Driver CPC periodic training hours. Your training centre must have registered you for a course before your progress shows.

How does the online course work?
Training is delivered live over Zoom, so you can join from home, the depot, or anywhere with a connection, using a phone, tablet or computer. You’ll get your joining instructions before the course, and sessions are interactive throughout.
Are my hours uploaded for me?
Yes — we upload your completed training to DVSA, so your record stays up to date without you having to chase anything. You can always check your hours yourself on the GOV.UK service.
Can I mix and match courses and times?
Absolutely. Courses run mornings, afternoons, evenings and weekends, every day of the week, so you can build your 35 hours around your shifts however works best. You can’t repeat the same module within a rolling 5-year period, so we’ll help you avoid duplicates.
When do I get my card?
Once your full 35 hours are complete and uploaded, DVSA issues your new Driver Qualification Card (DQC) to the address on your driving licence. If you’re renewing, your card is issued close to your current expiry date.
How much does it cost?
National courses are from £15.75 and International from £22.75 per course; a full 35-hour International CPC is from £113.75, and Return to Driving is £59. Full current prices are shown above — we’re confident you won’t find it cheaper in the UK.
